Local Vehicle Registration Fees

In addition to the value-based property tax, an annual local registration fee is imposed on all vehicles filed with Fairfax County. (Fairfax County Code Section 4-17.2-1)

There is no longer any vehicle registration decal to purchase or display (this is separate from residential parking districts and the state required safety inspection sticker). The same is true for the Towns of Clifton, Herndon, and Vienna.

The manufacturer's shipping weight or scale weight shall be used for computing all fees. The manufacturer's shipping weight shall be interpreted as the "empty weight" for passenger cars and shall be interpreted as the "gross vehicle weight" for trucks, to include pick-up trucks, as listed in the Virginia DMV records.

Fairfax County Fees

(Code Article 17.2, Section 2-3)

  • Motorcycles: $18
  • Taxicab or other vehicle which is kept for rent or hire operated by a chauffeur for the transportation of passengers
    • 4,000 lbs. or under: $23 | 4,001 lbs. or greater: $28
  • Vehicles used exclusively for transportation to and from church school, for the purpose of religious instruction, or church, for the purpose of divine worship
    • 4,000 lbs. or under: $23 | 4,001 lbs. or greater: $28
  • All other vehicles
    • 4,000 lbs. or under: $33 | 4,001 lbs. or greater: $38

Towns of Clifton, Herndon, and Vienna (Code of Virginia Section 46.2-752(M))

The towns of Clifton, Herndon, and Vienna have entered into an agreement with Fairfax County whereby the county will bill and collect the local registration fee on behalf of the towns. DTA will forward these funds to each town as appropriate.

Town of Clifton Fees

  • Motorcycles: $18
  • Taxicab or other vehicle which is kept for rent or hire operated by a chauffeur for the transportation of passengers 
    • 4,000 lbs. or under: $23 | 4,001 lbs. or greater: $28
  • Vehicles used exclusively for transportation to and from church school, for the purpose of religious instruction, or church, for the purpose of divine worship
    • 4,000 lbs. or under: $23 | 4,001 lbs. or greater: $28
  • All other vehicles 
    • 4,000 lbs. or under: $33 | 4,001 lbs. or greater: $38

Fee Exceptions (Fairfax County Code Section 4-17.2-2)

Vehicle Registration fees do not apply to:
  • Vehicles owned by the United States government, the state, or any political subdivision thereof
  • Vehicles owned and used by diplomats, their families, and employees
  • Vehicles owned by a qualified full-time active duty military service member (and qualifying spouse) absent from their state of residence
  • Vehicles used as a daily rental passenger vehicle
  • Vehicles owned by volunteer rescue squads
  • Vehicles owned by volunteer fire departments
  • Vehicles owned or leased by auxiliary police officers
  • Vehicles owned or leased by auxiliary police chaplains
  • Vehicles owned or leased by active members of volunteer fire departments
  • Vehicles owned or leased by active members of volunteer rescue squads

The following applicants are entitled to exemption from the vehicle registration fees on one (and only one) vehicle:

If you are not required to register your vehicle with the Virginia DMV in cases where your vehicle is inoperable and not otherwise driven on public roadways, you may be eligible for a waiver of the Fairfax County registration fee. Proration of Fees (Fairfax County Code Section 4-17.2-4(2)(c))

Vehicles located in Fairfax County shall be liable for the Local Vehicle Registration Fee and shall be subject to monthly proration on the same basis as specified for local personal property taxes with the exception of mobile homes and other non-proratable properties. (Fairfax County Code Section 4-17.1-5)

Moving to or from a non-prorating Virginia Locality with current decals/vehicle registration Fee (Code of Virginia Section 46.2.752(H))

Vehicles which are moved to or from any non-prorating locality within Virginia during the tax year, the local vehicle registration fee is not prorated. For more information Town Rules, (Code of Virginia Section 46.2-752(M))
